The April 17 O-meet at Sommer Park featured bodacious weather – perfect for anything but snow skiing so it was an especially pleasant day for orienteering.  The vegetation literally bloomed in the last 2 weeks making all courses a bit tougher than intended.  To make the small park more challenging, Competitors on all courses had to draw their maps while on the time clock.  The White course used the trails south of the park office then over to trails on the east side of the park and back to Woodland shelter.  All participants completed it successfully.  Yellow was a different story.  Several participants had difficulty with the same control.  The same control was on the Middle-O course and everyone got it – so the lesson for me was that I made it a bit too hard for Yellow.  Sorry about that to all who were adversely affected.  The Middle-O featured 24 controls in the north side of the park so one could rightly conclude there was a lot of instant gratification.  As promised, there were some interesting placements.  Of one, the comment was made, “after I saw it I had to figure out how to get to it”.  In another situation, 2 controls were within sight if one kept their head up and were thinking to look.  (Everyone I asked seemed to pass the test so far…).  But then there were three ways to get there.  Follow a contour line around (longest & the route choice most selected), follow one spur down and another up the other side (my choice and vegetation conditions dramatically impaired it for the day of the event) and straight through the re-entrant (nobody but Rich Pestien would choose this – and he smeared me by doing so when we were setting controls).

Scott Fredrickson, Hana Syslova, Dan Kratchovil, Fredrik Goransson, Rachel Furman, and Keith Turner picked up controls at the end of the event and WOW how efficient.  They planned it, did it, and I was packed and leaving the park at 2:50.  WOW – thanks again team!
